Coal is fed from coal staithes (1) to the boiler bunkers (2) by a conveyor belt, from where it is fed into pulverising mills (3) which grind the coal to powder. The pulverised coal is carried by a stream of air from the mills to the boiler burners (4), where it is blown into the furnace (5) to burn like a gas.To inert the coal, CO2 vapours used. CO2 injected in to the bottom of the bunker has been reported effective in smoothening fires. Use of a laser pyrometer or thermal imaging camera will greatly improve the ability to quickly locate the seat of the fire and identify where the smouldering coal exists in a large bunker or coal feeder body.


Boilers. To efficiently combust coal, it needs to be pulverized into fine particles (100μm) before being placed in a boiler. A pulverizer (coal pulverizer) is installed for this purpose, and pulverizes pieces of coal several centimeters in diameter down to fine particles. The pulverizer includes pulverization, drying and classification functions.The boiler house at Ferrybridge C Power Station contained the steam generating boilers and pulverised fuel mills. The four boiler units were manufactured by Babcock and Wilcox, were the single furnace, front wall fired, natural circulation type. They had a minimum efficiency of 76%, rising to 90.76% at continuous maximum rating.


From the crusher house the coal is either stored in dead storage( generally 40 days coal supply) which serves as coal supply in case of coal supply bottleneck or to the live storage(8 hours coal supply) in the raw coal bunker in the boiler house. Raw coal from the raw coal bunker is supplied to the Coal Mills by a Raw Coal Feeder.To summarize the coal mill controls, they may be divided basically into two major categories:. 1. To control the quality of coal being sent to the burners located on the furnace walls. The word quality here means the temperature and fineness of the PF. The set temperature values are dependent on the percentage of volatile matter that exists in the main fuel.


Bowl mills are used for pulversing coal in pulverized coal fired boilers. The coal to the mill is fed by a coal feeder from the coal bunker. There are many type of feeders used for coal feeding like the belt feeder which can be in volumetric or gravimetric mode, the chain link feeder, the drag feeder, etc. Row coal from the yard is sized in crushers and stored in coal bunkers.An alternative arrangement of boiler plant is possible where the coal bunkers, feeders and pulverised fuel mills are located on either side of the boiler. Such an arrangement extends considerably the spacing or centreline distances of the boilers and therefore is most suited to a station design utilising longitudinal turbine arrangements.
